The figurative reliefs of Porta San Sebastiano. A re–evaluation

In 1941, two decorated marble slab fragments were found during restoration works inside the Saint Sebastian gate to the via Appia. The better–preserved slab shows three figures wearing togas, positioned on different planes and surmounted by a swag or festoon. Six male figures positioned along three lines are recognisable on the second, very worn slab. At the time, based on their thematic and stylistic characteristics, both reliefs were dated to the beginning of the third century AD and considered to have been part of a funerary monument. In point of fact, the two reliefs call for a more complex interpretation, in view of both their poor state of conservation and the context in which they were found. The study proposes a re–evaluation of the earlier research and puts forward new iconographic interpretations of the figures, together with a new interpretative analysis of the two pieces.
