A female head from Taranto

The article examines a female head made of Parian (lychnites) marble, from a private Roman collection. The formal and iconographical analysis of this high quality sculpture points to a very close relationship with the sculptural tradition in marble and terracotta in Taranto and leads us to conclude that the work was made during the last decades of the 4th century BC by an artist from Taranto. He adopted typical elements from Praxiteles’ language and mixed these with his own local style. The head, which was part of a small votive or religious statue, represents a young goddess. As there are no particular characteristics or way of knowing where she was found, we are unable to identify her. However a review of the cults practiced in Taranto and the chora suggest three possible alternatives: Aphrodite, Kore–Persephone or the nymph Satyria.
