The architecture of wooden paneled polyptychs and anconas in Northern Italy between the fifteenth and fourteenth century

The paper pieces together the history of wooden paneled polyptychs and anconas in Northern Italy between 1450 and 1525. It is based on the most recent published articles as well as a comparison between photographs of the various works, original drawings and analytical study of their wooden structures. The Author takes the chance to deepen the research he first broached for the Zenale e Leonardo exhibition in Milan's Museo Poldi Pezzoli in 1982–1983. The original research was based on results from the restoration of the pieces, taken apart and then remounted, as well as Giorgio Rolando Perino’s technical drawings. It compared the painted sculpted moulding of the polyptych’s frame to painted wooden sculpture, as well as hypothesizing the possible form of the missing frames.
