Organisational phases, scientific aspects and unpublished documents from two major Fascist era exhibitions

By researching documents and first hand fonts two major exhibitions between 1937 and 1938 have been analysed. Both exalted Ancient Rome and all of its trappings: Mostra Augustea della Romanità (Roman Life in the Age of Augustus) and Mostra del Restauro dei Monumenti nell’Era Fascista (The Restoration of Ancient Monuments during the Fascist Era). While the first was a major event, fairly well known about by today’s scholars, the second has been pretty much ignored and forgotten to this day, as it was in part at the time. This paper has used the few archive documents that still exist. It has been possible to accurately piece together the exhibition’s organisation, highlighting its scientific aspect. The two events apparently differ one from the other, but they have a common goal: to communicate a new way of looking at the cult of ancient history. Here “art” is transmitted as a fundamental part of everybody’s everyday life. They take the form of a redemption for Italian scholars when compared to their colleagues abroad, so critical of Roman architecture, while Italian mastery in the field of restoration is put on display. This project has also uncovered new documents. These include unpublished drawings by Luigi Piccinato and Pasquale Carbonara of the arrangements for the Mostra Augustea. There are also photographs and newspaper articles about the Mostra del Restauro which were previously unknown to many scholars. The piece also highlights the role of architects who, with the birth of the Scuola Superiore di Architettura and new laws aimed at safeguarding this new professional figure, saw new rights acquired.
