L’articolo ripercorre le vicende della cappella dell’Annunziata fatta costruire da Piero de’ Medici nella omonima basilica fiorentina a partire dal 1448 e chiarisce quali furono le addizioni apportate al complesso tra il 1461 e il 1463 per volere dello stesso Piero, confutando l’ipotesi che vorrebbe posticipare a questi anni l’erezione della loggia trabeata. Ristabilita la corretta successione cronologica dei lavori e individuata la probabile responsabilità di Bernardo Rossellino per il progetto dell’ultimo intervento, lo scritto si dedica a esaminare uno dei celebri elementi di corredo della cappella, l’acquasantiera, e, tramite le testimonianze delle fonti, ne ricostruisce l’aspetto mettendo in luce l’importanza che questa dovette rivestire per lo sviluppo di simili opere di arredo.
Piero de’ Medici again and the Chapel of the Annunziata. Clarifications over the ultimate refurbishment (1461–1463) and thoughts on the lost Medici Holy Water stoup
This paper follows a sequence of events concerning the Chapel of the Annunziata in the basilica of the same name in Florence. It was commissioned by Piero de’ Medici in 1448. It illustrates what was added to the complex between 1461 and 1463, at the bequest of the same Piero. This discredits the belief that the trabeated loggia had been built in these years. Once the correct sequence of events was established, and the probable author of the chapel’s ultimate refurbishment identified as Bernardo Rossellino, the paper moves on to examine one of the chapel’s famous furnishings – the Holy Water stoup. Working from the records, its appearance and importance for the production of other similar furnishings has been revealed.
