Fragments of a bas–relief from Spoleto’s Roman theatre. A possible reconstruction and interpretation.

Some fragments of a marble bas–relief came to light during the excavation of Spoleto’s Roman theatre during the 1950s. They formed part of the scaenae frons. An analysis of the subject matter and iconography has suggested some possible interpretations for the scenes, ranging from mythological representations to gods and goddesses. The reliefs date to the second quarter of the second century CE, showing that the theatre was renovated between the end of Hadrian’s reign and the beginning of Antoninus Pius’. The original structure was built during the last decades of the first century BCE.
