Alcuni recenti interventi critici hanno messo meglio a fuoco l’attività a Genova e in Liguria di Andrea di Ciona e di Filippo Solari da Carona, che si rivelò determinante per lo sviluppo della scultura ligure intorno alla metà del Quattrocento. Una serie di opere tuttora preservate rivela l’influenza che i due maestri caronesi esercitarono nel contesto genovese e costituisce un nucleo omogeneo che, al momento, non è possibile assegnare a nessun artefice noto. L’esempio di Andrea e Filippo fu fondamentale per la formazione di Giovanni di Andrea da Bissone, della quale si propone una ricostruzione a partire dal confronto con le prime opere documentate o già attribuite all’artista.

Some recent critiques have better pinned down the activity in Genoa, and Liguria as a whole, of Andrea da Ciona and Filippo Solari da Carona. Their work was fundamental to the development of wood carving in the mid fifteenth century. A series of works that have come down to us reveal the influence that the two Maestri Caronesi had on the Genoese circle of artists. As yet, it has been impossible to attribute any one of the homogenous group of works to one particular known artist. Andrea and Filippo’s example was fundamental to the development of Giovanni di Andrea da Bissone. His early years have been pieced together by confronting his first documented or previously attributed works.
