The Technology of Wood and Systems for Constructing and Working Statuary

This article describes the peculiar characteristics of wood, which have ordained its success as a material of cultural assets, and in particular wooden statuary. After first evaluating its limiting characteristics, such as the dimensions of the tree trunks as a starting point and the presence of anomalies or defects, the author then examines the technical aspects that play in its favour, such as lightness, easy availability and its workability. The article describes through various examples how artists who worked in wood understood these technological characteristics and how they succeeded in exalting the favorable ones, but, above all, how they were able to work with the material in such a way as to transform those aspects that were a constraint into a resource.
