Nel marzo 2013 l’autore del saggio ha restaurato un busto di marmo, conservato nel Museo del Tesoro della Basilica di San Pietro, indicato come ritratto del cardinale Enrico Benedetto Stuart scolpito da Antonio Canova. Il restauro ha dato l’opportunità di riflettere sia sulla reale identità del personaggio rappresentato che sull’attribuzione, resa improbabile, per evidenti ragioni stilistiche, alla mano del Canova. Un’analisi più attenta ha rivelato come i lineamenti del volto restituiscano, in realtà, la figura del cardinale Francesco Saverio de Zelada. Si è quindi investigato, preliminarmente, sulla possibilità di identificare come autore della scultura Vincenzo Pacetti, che annota nel suo Giornale di aver eseguito, nel 1774, un ritratto del cardinale de Zelada. Inediti documenti, però, conservati nell’Archivio della Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano, hanno accertato che il busto marmoreo è da attribuire a Nicola Valentini, scultore e restauratore attivo nella seconda metà del diciottesimo secolo presso il Museo Pio-Clementino, e che a questo stesso autore sono da assegnare anche altri due busti marmorei: uno rappresentante papa Pio VI, conservato negli ambienti dello Studio del Mosaico in Vaticano; l’altro il cardinale Enrico Benedetto Stuart, sito nel Palazzo di Propaganda Fide a Roma.
Recent Research in the Vatican Basilica: A previously unpublished portrait of cardinal Francesco Saverio de Zelada, and new attributions for three marble busts to Nicola Valentini
In March 2013 the author of the essay restored a marble bust in the Museo del Tesoro in St. Peter’s Basilica that was held to be a portrait of cardinal Enrico Benedetto Stuart sculpted by Antonio Canova. The restoration provided the opportunity to reflect on both the true identity of the represented individual and on the attribution to Canova, shown to be improbable for evident stylistic factors. Careful analysis has revealed that the facial features are in fact those of Cardinal Francesco Saverio de Zelada. This discovery led the author to investigate the possibility that the sculptor was Vincenzo Pacetti, who noted in his Giornale that he had executed, in 1774, a portrait of Cardinal de Zelada. From unpublished documents in the Archivio della Fabbrica di San Pietro in the Vatican, however, the author has ascertained that the marble bust is correctly attributable to Nicola Valentini, a sculptor and conservator active in the second half of the eighteenth century at the Pio–Clementino Museum. It has also been possible to assign two other marble busts to the same artist, one representing Pope Pius VI, found in the Studio del Mosaico in the Vatican, and the other portraying Cardinal Enrico Benedetto Stuart, located in the Palazzo di Propaganda Fide in Rome.
