La storia dell’antiquaria napoletana è una storia complessa che coinvolge non solo la corte e gli illuministi napoletani ma anche gli studiosi di tutti i grandi paesi europei e la “republica letteraria”. Attraverso la ricostruzione delle vicende degli scavi delle città del Vesuvio e la riscoperta dei vasi greci il presente contributo intende dimostrare che Napoli è stato il laboratorio per la fondazione delle moderne scienze dell’antichità in stretto rapporto con il pensiero del Lumi. La conquista del passato diventa allora un momento chiave di strutturazione delle scienze umane all’incrocio tra storia delle religioni, antropologia e archeologia.
The antiquarian culture in Naples in the eighteenth century
The history of Neapolitan antiquarianism is a complex history involving not only the court and Neapolitan exponents of the Enlightenment, but also érudits in all the major European countries and the “republic of letters”. Through a reconstruction of the history of the excavations of the buried cities of Vesuvius and the rediscovery of Greek vases, the present contribution aims to demonstrate that Naples was a laboratory for the foundation of the modern sciences of antiquity in close relationship with the thought of the Enlightenment. The discovery of the past then became a key moment in the development and definition of the human sciences at the intersection between the history of religions, anthropology and archaeology.
