Lo studio di un disegno attribuito a Joseph Nollekens, oggi conservato presso il Royal Institute of British Architects di Londra (RIBA) e quello di un dipinto, in collezione privata, del pittore bergamasco Pietro Ronzoni, con una veduta del Mausoleo di Augusto, ha permesso di recuperare nuovi dati sulla collezione di sculture antiche riunite dai Soderini tra le rovine del sepolcro imperiale. Il foglio di Nollekens, in particolare, riproduce le quattro sculture collocate, fin dalla metà del Cinquecento, all’ingresso del giardino pensile e ai piedi dello scalone di accesso al Palazzo Soderini: un gruppo di marmi già in parte identificati e a cui si aggiunge ora la statua femminile con testa-ritratto (cd. Lucilla), oggi a Berlino. Il quadro di Ronzoni suggerisce, inoltre, la possibile presenza, nella collezione Soderini, di una statua femminile con testa-ritratto non pertinente, oggi a Villa Borghese.
Two artists at the Mausoleum of Augustus: Joseph Nollekens and Pietro Ronzoni
The paper analyses a drawing thought to be by Joseph Nollekens, now housed in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London, and a painting held in a private collection, by the Bergamascan artist Pietro Ronzoni. They are both views of the Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome. The pictures provide further evidence about the Soderini family collection of ancient sculpture, on display among the ruins of the Imperial tomb. It’s Nollekens drawing that best captures the four statues that, from the middle of the 1500s, stood at the entrance to the hanging gardens and at the foot of the stairs leading up to the entrance to Palazzo Soderini. This group of marbles had already in part been identified, and are joined by a female portrait bust (known as Lucilla), now in Berlin. Ronzoni’s work hints at the possible presence in the Soderini collection of the female statue with a the bust of a different statue attached to it, now housed in Villa Borghese.
