Il contributo è incentrato sull’analisi di una testa fittile di grande formato rinvenuta nel 1972 in un’area a vocazione commerciale e, in piccola parte, produttivo-artigianale, appena al di fuori della cinta di fortificazione urbana meridionale di Camarina. Le qualità tecnico-formali del pezzo, inquadrabile cronologicamente agli inizi del III sec. a.C. e in origine pertinente a un busto o a una statua, risultano straordinarie nel panorama della coroplastica siceliota del periodo e accrescono il dispiacere per le sfortunate vicende legate al suo trafugamento, qualche tempo dopo la scoperta. L’evidente eco tolemaica di cui la testa è improntata offre, inoltre, il pretesto per una indagine dell’influenza artistica alessandrina sull’artigianato di età ellenistico-romana in Sicilia e del ruolo rivestito dal centro di Camarina nei rapporti tra la regione e l’Egitto.
A terracotta head of Alexandrine influence from the area facing the southern town walls of Camarina
The article is focused on analysing a large terracotta head found in 1972 in an area allocated in the main to commercial and to a lesser extent craft and manufacturing activities, just outside the southern fortified walls of ancient Camarina. In technique and form, the piece can be dated to the early 3rd century BC. It would have originally formed part of a bust or statue, and is extraordinary in the context of Siceliot terracotta sculpture of the period. All the more regrettable, therefore, are the unfortunate events that led to its theft some time after its discovery. The evident Ptolomaic influence that distinguishes the head further prompts the author to examine the Alexandrine artistic influence on arts and crafts of the Hellenistic–Roman period in Sicily and the role played by Camarina in relations between the island and Egypt.
