Durante la sua carriera come restauratore Vincenzo Pacetti non solo ha completato tantissimi torsi antichi, ma ogni tanto ha creato anche gruppi statuari, scegliendo occasionalmente un tema per il quale non esisteva una versione scultorea in epoca antica. È questo il caso del gruppo di Dioniso e Arianna, che i Musei Vaticani hanno acquistato da Pacetti nel 1804 e che attualmente è esposto nel Giardino della Pigna. Esaminando questo gruppo risulta evidente che Pacetti per la statua di Dioniso ha combinato la testa di una cariatide con un torso maschile, mentre per l’Arianna sembra essersi servito soltanto di un piccolo frammento di scultura antica. Pacetti fu a tal punto preso da tale creazione, che dopo la vendita del primo gruppo decise di creare un secondo gruppo analogo, che però non ha mai trovato un acquirente.
Pacetti as an ideator of two–figure sculpture groups
During his career as a restorer Vincenzo Pacetti not only restored to completion a large number of ancient torsos, but on several occasions also created new statuary groups, at times selecting a theme for which no sculpted version was known from classical antiquity. A case in point is the group Dionysus and Ariadne, acquired by the Vatican Museums from Pacetti in 1804, and presently on display in the Giardino della Pigna. Examining the group it becomes evident that for his statue of Dionysus Pacetti combined the head of a caryatid with a male torso, while for Ariadne he seems to have made use only of a small fragment of an ancient sculpture. So taken was Pacetti with his creation, that after its sale he decided to create a second analogous group. For this one, however, he never managed to find a buyer.
