Il discorso sugli stemmi estensi presenti nella Bibbia di Borso d’Este intende ribadire quanto era già stato detto, da un precedente studio dell’Auore, a proposito della trasformazione dei motivi araldici di Borso e del fratellastro Ercole, divenuto Duca di Ferrara, Modena e Reggio, nonché Conte di Rovigo, il 19 agosto 1471. Gli abili miniaturisti del Duca Ercole I, trasformarono quasi tutti gli stemmi delduca defunto in quelli del duca vivente. Alcuni stemmi del Duca Borso non vennero trasformati, forse per obiettive difficoltà di operare i ritocchi, ma almeno tre vennero lasciati integri, probabilmente per volontà del duca Ercole I. Quest’ultimo volle così onorare la memoria del fratellastro che gli aveva facilitato la successione, preferendolo al nipote ex fratre  Nicolò di Leonello.

The coats of arms

The article is devoted to the coats of arms of the house of Este displayed in the Bible of Borso d’Este. It rehearses what had already been said by the author in a previous study with regard to the transformation of the heraldic motifs of Borso and his half–brother Ercole d’Este, who became Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio and Count of Rovigo on 19 August 1471. The expert miniaturists of Duke Ercole I transformed almost all the coats of arms of the deceased duke into that of the living duke. Some coats of arms of Borso d’Este, however, were not converted, perhaps due to objective difficulties in making the necessary adjustments. At least three were deliberately left intact, probably by wish of Duke Ercole I. In this way, the author suggests, Ercole wished to honour the memory of his half–brother who had facilitated his succession by preferring him to his nephew ex fratre Nicolò di Leonello.
