Negli scavi effettuati tra il 1952 e il 1960 nel teatro romano di Spoleto, furono rinvenuti numerosi materiali scultorei pertinenti alla sua decorazione: tra questi una scultura greca, databile negli ultimi decenni del V secolo a.C., raffigurante un’Aura e destinata in origine ad essere utilizzata come acroterio. Dopo essere stata portata in Italia in età tardo-repubblicana o primo-imperiale, come molte altre sculture architettoniche greche, venne in parte modificata e collocata probabilmente sulla frons scaenae del teatro.
A Greek sculpture from the Roman Theatre in Spoleto
In the excavations conducted in the Roman Theatre at Spoleto between 1952 and 1960, numerous fragments of the architectural sculpture that formed part of its decoration were recovered. They include an original Greek sculpture, datable to the last decades of the 5th century BC. Representing an Aura, it would have been originally used as an acroterion. After having been brought to Italy in the late–republican or early–imperial period, like many other Greek architectural sculptures, it was in part modified and probably placed on the frons scaenae of the theatre.
